If your Windows laptop says your camera isn’t detected, don’t worry; this usually means the camera app needs a quick reset or the system needs to refresh the camera hardware. Follow the steps below to fix this on your Windows laptop.
What You'll Need
- Your Windows laptop
- A strong internet connection
- Your laptop charger
Step 1: Restart Your Laptop
This refreshes Windows and reconnects the camera hardware.
- Select the Start menu.
- Select Power → Restart.
After restarting, open Camera and check if it works.
Step 2: Reset the Camera App
This fixes settings issues that can prevent the camera from loading.
- Select the Start menu → type Camera → right-click → choose App settings.
- Scroll down and select Reset.
Alternatively:
- You can also open Settings → Apps → Installed apps
- Find Camera
- Select Advanced options
- Scroll down and select Reset.

Step 3: Check for Windows Updates
HP camera drivers update through Windows. If your system is out of date, the camera might not load.
- Select Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.

Step 4: Make Sure Apps Have Permission to Use the Camera
Zoom, Teams, and Chrome, etc, all use Windows Camera permissions.
- Select Start → Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Camera.
- Make sure Camera access and Let apps use my camera are both turned On.
Step 5: Run the Windows Camera Troubleshooter
- Select Start → Settings.
- Select System → Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Find Camera → select Run.
