Factory Reset — HP EliteBook 840 G5/G7 (Full Wipe)
Use these steps to return the laptop to factory settings. This erases all data.
Before You Start
- Back up files before starting. This process deletes files, apps, and settings from the laptop.
- Power: Plug in the AC adapter.
Important:
This is a full wipe. Any files that are not backed up will be deleted.
Method 1 — HP Sure Recover
Note:
On HP laptops, pressing F11 may open HP Sure Recover instead of the Windows Recovery Environment. On our HP models, HP Sure Recover can be used as the easier first option to start the factory reset process.
- Shut down the laptop completely.
- Power on the laptop and tap F11 repeatedly until HP Sure Recover appears.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to begin the reset/recovery process, using from network if connected to the internet.

Method 2 — Windows Recovery Environment / WinRE
Use this method if HP Sure Recover does not open or you are unable to continue from that screen.
- Make sure the laptop is plugged into power.
- Turn the laptop on.
- As soon as Windows begins loading, press and hold the Power button until the laptop shuts off.
- Repeat this process three times.
- On the next startup, the laptop may show Preparing Automatic Repair. This is expected and means Windows is opening the recovery menu.
- When the recovery screen appears, select Advanced options.
- Select Troubleshoot → Reset this PC.
- Choose Remove everything.
- Select Cloud download or Local reinstall → follow the prompts.

If you are prompted to enter a recovery key, please stop and contact Student Technology Services (STS). This means the device is protected with BitLocker, and STS will need to assist you with the reset.
