Factory Reset — HP EliteBook 840 G5/G7 (Full Wipe)
Use these steps to return the laptop to factory settings. This erases all data.
Before You Start
- Back up files (everything will be deleted).
- Power: Plug in the AC adapter.
- BitLocker: Have the recovery key ready (if enabled).
- Work/School devices: You may need to re-enroll/sign in after the reset.
Method 1 — F11 Recovery (Recommended)
- Shut down the laptop completely and plug in AC.
- Power on and tap F11 repeatedly until the HP/Windows Recovery screen appears.
- Select Troubleshoot → Reset this PC.
- Choose Remove everything.
- Select Cloud download or Local reinstall → click Reset and follow the prompts.
Method 2 — From Windows (If Windows Loads)
- Open Start → type reset → select Reset this PC.
- Click Get started → select Remove everything.
- (Optional) Choose Fully clean the drive for a more secure wipe.
- Select Cloud download or Local reinstall → click Reset.
If F11 Doesn’t Work
- Press Esc at boot, then choose F11 System Recovery.
- If recovery is missing or corrupted, use HP Cloud Recovery media.
After the Reset
- Complete Windows setup and sign in.
- Run Windows Update and install drivers (HP Support Assistant if needed).
- Reinstall apps and restore data (if applicable).
If you are prompted to enter a recovery key, please stop and contact Student Technology Services (STS). This means the device is protected with BitLocker, and STS will need to assist you with the reset.
