How to Initiate a Reset on an HP Laptop (Keeps Files)

Reset (Keep My Files)  — HP Laptop

Use Reset (Keep my files) to keep personal files while resetting your device. Apps and settings will be removed.

 

Before You Start

  • Back up any important files before starting the reset.

  • Power: Plug in the AC adapter.

Important:

On school-managed laptops, starting Reset this PC from inside Windows may require administrator approval. If you are unable to start the reset from Windows, use the Windows Recovery Environment / WinRE method below.

 

From Windows Recovery Environment / WinRE

Important:

To use Keep my files, use the Windows Recovery Environment / WinRE restart method below.

HP Sure Recover will remove locally saved data.

 

  1. Make sure the laptop is plugged into power.
  2. Turn the laptop on.
  3. As soon as Windows begins loading, press and hold the Power button until the laptop shuts off.
  4. Repeat this process three times.
  5. On the next startup, Windows should open Preparing Automatic Repair or the Windows Recovery Environment.
  6. Select Advanced options.
  7. Select Troubleshoot → Reset this PC.
  8. Choose Keep my files.
  9. Select Cloud download or Local reinstall → follow prompts.

Important:

If you are prompted to enter a recovery key, please stop and contact Student Technology Services (STS). This means the device is protected with BitLocker, and STS will need to assist you with the reset.
