Some laptops include a hardware privacy switch for the webcam. When it’s enabled, the camera is blocked, and apps like Chrome, Campuswire, Zoom, or the Camera app won’t detect video.
Step 1 – Locate the Switch
Look for a slider near the webcam (above the screen).
Some manufacturers place it on the keyboard deck or the side of the laptop.
A few use a function key (F6, F8, F10, or a key with a camera icon).

Step 2 – Disable Privacy Mode
Slide the switch until the red/orange dot disappears, or the shutter physically moves away from the lens.
If your laptop uses a function key, press Fn + [camera icon key] once to toggle the webcam back on.

Step 3 – Test the Camera
Press Windows + S, type Camera, and open the Camera app.
Or test in Microsoft Teams / Zoom / Campuswire.
Verify your video feed is visible.
Step 4 – Check Windows Settings (if still blocked)
Go to Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Camera.
Ensure Camera access and Let apps access your camera are turned On.
Step 5 – If It Still Doesn’t Work
Check for an external privacy cover (clip-on filter) and remove it.
If the physical switch or key is broken, contact your Student Technology Support (STS).
