Overview
A Powerwash (factory reset) restores your Chromebook to its original factory settings. This can help fix persistent issues, remove user data, or prepare the device for a new user.
⚠️ Important:
A Powerwash will delete all local data on the Chromebook, including:
- Downloads and saved files
- User accounts on the device
- Offline files and settings
Files stored in Google Drive will not be deleted.
Before You Begin
- Before performing a Powerwash, make sure to:
- Back up any important files (upload to Google Drive or external storage)
- Sign out of all accounts if possible
- Ensure the Chromebook is charged or plugged in
Method 1: Powerwash Using Keyboard Shortcut
- Sign out of the Chromebook
- On the login screen, press: Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R
- Click Restart
- In the box that appears, click Powerwash → Continue
After the Reset
- Once the Powerwash is complete:
- The Chromebook will restart
- Follow the on-screen setup instructions
- Sign in with your Google account
When Should You Powerwash?
- The device is running slowly or experiencing errors
- Preparing the Chromebook for a new user
- Troubleshooting software issues that won’t resolve
- Cryptohome corrupted message.
Additional Notes
This process removes all local users and data.
Managed/school devices may automatically re-enroll after reset
If issues persist after a Powerwash, contact IT support
