Some Chromebooks include a hardware privacy switch for the webcam. When it’s enabled, the camera is blocked, and apps like browsers, Campuswire, Zoom, or the Camera app won’t detect video.
Step 1 – Locate the Switch
Look along the sides of the Chromebook (left or right edge) or just above the webcam.
On some models (HP, Lenovo), it’s a slider with a red/orange marker when the camera is blocked.
A few models use a keyboard key with a camera/eye icon.

Step 2 – Disable Privacy Mode
Slide the switch until the red/orange marker disappears (this re-opens the webcam).
If it’s a button key, press it once — the indicator light should turn off.

Step 3 – Test the Camera
Open the Camera app.
Or join a Google Meet/Zoom/Live Room call.
Verify that the video feed is visible.
Step 4 – Verify Camera Permissions (If Still Blocked)
If the camera still does not work, go to Settings → Privacy & security → Camera.
Make sure “Sites can ask to use your camera” is turned On.
In the app or browser you’re using (Meet, Zoom, etc.), confirm the camera device is selected and allowed.
Step 5 – If It Still Doesn’t Work
Ensure no physical privacy filter is attached over the lens.
If the hardware switch feels stuck or broken, contact Student Technology Support (STS).
